Rules in Monroe County
- The Waste Reduction District runs a pay-as-you-throw Orange Bag program for county residents without city curbside pickup or a private hauler: trash must be in special orange bags (no loose trash) and is dropped at the four rural recycling centers during open hours. Orange bags are not accepted at South Walnut. Source
- Free bulky item disposal is offered to Monroe County residents only, on a monthly rotation at the rural recycling centers. Only listed items are accepted (furniture, mattresses, area rugs, bathroom fixtures, large toys and similar); carpeting and metal items are not. No unloading help is provided and businesses, landlords, churches, schools and haulers are excluded. Source
Before you go
- Tarp the load; uncovered loads often cost more at the gate.
- Liquids, paint and chemicals usually go to a hazardous waste site, not the dump.
- Sort recyclables, metal and yard waste before you go; many sites have separate areas for them.
